Springs Openers Doors

Garage Doors in ClaradayA door that lifts
the way it should.

Homes in Claraday rely on the garage door more than any other entrance, and when it hesitates, grinds or stops halfway, the whole morning slows down. We look over the springs, cables, rollers and opener together, explain what has worn in plain words, and leave the door running the way it did when it was new.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 64 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 64% of homes in Peterborough were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Older houses frequently have a garage door that was replaced once already, sometimes with a door chosen for the opening rather than the building. When that door reaches its end, there is a chance to pick a style that suits the house properly, and we measure with that in mind.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Peterborough (2021 Census).Mixed housing often means mixed access too: individual remotes and keypads on the houses, building fobs and shared gates on the condos. We program, clear and replace all of these, and keep property managers in the loop where a door serves more than one household.

Off-Track Garage Door Reset

Kneeling technician pressing a black rubber seal along the base of a white garage door, with a coiled roll and drill beside. — Claraday
The call
There was a loud bang from the garage, then silence. The door is jammed a third of the way open, wedged at an angle in the tracks, and the opener light is blinking while the trolley slides uselessly along the rail.

Garage Door Roller Replacement

Person kneeling by a white paneled door in a garage, one hand on the black seal along its bottom edge. — Garage Door Roller Replacement, Claraday
The call
Halfway up, the door hesitates and the opener strains before it carries on. Pulled by hand with the opener released, you feel the same catch at the same height, as if a wheel is dragging instead of turning.

Garage Door Balance Adjustment

Technician holding a notebook while looking at a closed sectional door. — Garage Door Balance Adjustment, Claraday
The call
You pulled the red cord to move the door by hand during the power cut, lifted it to about waist height and let go. Instead of staying put, it kept climbing on its own and thumped into the fully open stop.

Cables, drums and whether the door sits level

Chain-Drive Opener Repair

Person holding a yellow drill and looking up at a blue and white opener above a gray paneled garage door. — Chain-Drive Opener Repair, Claraday
The call
The door opens about a third of the way and stops. Turning the limit screw on the head has made no difference, and the trolley seems to sit in the wrong place along the rail when the door is fully closed.

Nothing on a garage door stores more energy than a wound spring. Handling it well means securing the door, releasing the tension in a controlled way, fitting the correct replacement and rewinding to the right count. This category is that work.

  1. Part 1The panels

    Garage Door Panel Replacement

The top section has developed a bend where the opener arm pulls on it. On the way up it flexes visibly, the door hesitates near the top of its travel, and daylight shows through the joint below it when the door is closed.

  2. Part 2The springs

    Torsion Spring Replacement

Looking up at the coil above the door, you can see a clean split with a gap of several centimetres between the two halves. The rest of the spring looks fine, but the door has become almost impossible to move by hand.

  3. Part 3The cables

    Garage Door Cable Replacement

Standing inside with the door closed, you notice the cable on the right side near the floor has gone fuzzy. A handful of broken wires stick out like a bottle brush and the steel underneath is brown.

  4. Part 4Tracks and rollers

    Garage Door Roller Replacement

New springs went in last year and the door balances well, yet it still clicks along the ceiling track like a train over rail joints. The wheels are the originals, worn to an oval, and the noise follows them from one end of the travel to the other.

  5. Part 5The opener

Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair

The door stops partway up for no reason, or opens fine and then refuses the next time. Some days the keypad works and some days it does not.

Frequently asked questions

Should I lubricate the track to help the rollers?

No. The track is meant to be clean and dry; grease on the rail gathers dirt and makes the wheels slide rather than roll, which wears them faster and can contribute to a roller leaving the rail. Put a silicone spray made for garage doors, or a lithium grease, on the hinge pins, roller bearings and spring coils, wipe off the excess, and give the tracks nothing more than a damp cloth.

My door is heavy insulated steel. Which rollers suit it?

A heavier door needs rollers with a load rating to match, generally ball-bearing rollers rated around seventy-five to one hundred pounds each rather than the light plastic wheels many doors ship with. It often needs long-stem rollers at the double hinges on the end stiles, and the top rollers, which travel furthest under load, deserve the sturdiest in the set. Nylon with ten or more bearings suits most insulated residential doors; very heavy or commercial-weight doors may still call for steel.

What is the difference between balancing a torsion door and an extension-spring door?

A torsion door has springs on a shaft above the opening, and tension is changed by winding the springs with steel bars, a quarter turn at a time. An extension door has springs along the tracks, and tension is changed by moving the hook or cable clip to a different position with the door open and clamped. The hand test that proves the result is the same for both.

Why does the door jerk or jump at the same spot every time?

A repeatable jolt at one point on the rail is usually a chain problem meeting a sprocket problem: a stiff link or a spread master link passing over worn sprocket teeth, so the chain rides up and drops a tooth. It can also be a burr or a splice plate on the rail where the trolley catches, or a roller on the door hanging up in the track at that height. The technician runs the door by hand first to tell the two apart.
